Dear fellow citizens,
Yesterday, in plenary session, during the vote on the Ministry of Justice budget, I relayed your concerns about degrading body searches in prisons.
I am pleased to pass on to you the positive, reassuring and satisfactory response from the Minister of Finance and Budget, Mr. Cheikh Diba.
The Minister has announced the good news that the project to put an end to manual searches in prisons will get underway in 2026, thanks to the acquisition of body scanners, walk-through metal detectors, GSM jammers and other equipment. This project, with a budget of 2 billion FCFA, will be integrated into the program to secure Senegal's prisons, at a total cost of 6,288,000,000 FCFA for the period 2026-2028.
Alhamdoulilah. By 2026, these humiliating practices will be a thing of the past for all prisoners in Senegal. We will then be able to thank the government of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, under the leadership of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, for its efforts to ensure respect for human dignity in detention centers.
